The Holy Spirit: Devotional #35 — Infilling: Receiving the Fullness

My Story of Infilling

I came to faith in Christ through a group of young people who, despite their imperfections, genuinely loved God and loved one another. There was something different about them. They possessed a joy, authenticity, and spiritual life that I longed for myself.

As the gospel was preached, I made a decisive choice. Like moving a chess piece from one side of the board to the other, I transferred my allegiance to God and confessed Jesus Christ as Lord. I experienced the Father’s love and acceptance and discovered the warmth of a new church family.

A year later, God called me to serve on a ten-month mission trip in the Philippines. I had traveled halfway around the world in obedience to Him, but along the way I became increasingly aware of my own spiritual poverty. I loved Christ, yet I recognized how much I needed the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.

So I began seeking the Lord more earnestly. I examined my heart, confessed known sin, surrendered my ambitions, and yielded myself afresh to God. More than anything, I wanted Him. Desperate for God to meet me, I asked the Holy Spirit to fill me.

What happened next was not what I expected.

There was no dramatic display, no overwhelming manifestation. Instead, I gradually became aware of a growing stream of spiritual life flowing from within me. Jesus’ words began to make sense in a new way: “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:38-39).

The change was real. Through simple faith and wholehearted surrender, God had answered my prayer. The Holy Spirit had come in greater fullness and power.

My faith felt small, but it was enough. God met me there.

Faith Takes

At the time, I did not fully understand what I know now: faith takes hold of what God freely gives.

We receive salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. In the same way, we receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit by faith.

Sometimes we mistakenly wait passively for something dramatic to happen, as though we must remain motionless until God suddenly “zaps” us with power. Yet the pattern of Scripture is often much simpler. God promises, and faith responds.

Imagine someone handing you a Christmas gift. You do not earn it. You do not deserve it. You simply reach out and receive it.

The fullness of the Spirit is God’s gift. Faith reaches out and says, “Thank You, Lord. I receive what You desire to give.”

Faith Receives

Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not something we achieve through effort or spiritual striving. It is something Christ graciously gives.

As your heart longs for more of God, you can come to Him with confidence. Jesus Himself promised, “For everyone who asks receives” (Matthew 7:8).

The Lord delights to fill yielded lives with His presence. Our part is not to manufacture the experience but to trust the Giver and rejoice.

Faith receives.

Faith Gives Out

For me, receiving the fullness of the Spirit felt like being handed an extraordinary gift card worth thousands of dollars. At first, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it.

But the purpose of God’s gift is never merely personal enjoyment. The Holy Spirit empowers us so that we can love, serve, witness, and minister in Christ’s name.

So I began spending myself for God.

I stepped out in obedience. I shared my faith. I served others. I took risks for the kingdom. As I poured out what God was pouring in, I discovered that His supply was greater than I had imagined.

The Spirit fills us not simply for our blessing but so that the life of Christ might flow through us to others.

Faith takes. Faith receives. Faith gives out.

Response

Are you filled with the Holy Spirit?

You have prepared your heart. You have surrendered yourself to God. Now reach out in simple faith and receive what your heavenly Father delights to give.

Come to Him with an open heart. Ask. Trust. Receive.

And then step forward in faith, allowing the living water of the Holy Spirit to flow through your life to a thirsty world.
