Turning Points That Become Our Stories
As believers we tell the story of how we came to Christ. We often describe our life before Christ, the circumstances that drew us to Him, and the moment we surrendered our lives to Him. Salvation did not happen in a vacuum. God was at work through people, events, convictions, and encounters that led us to that turning point.
In a similar way, being filled with the Holy Spirit is often marked by a spiritual crossroads. We do not simply wake up one morning suddenly aware that we have been filled with the Spirit. There is usually a deeper work of surrender that prepares our hearts to receive all that God desires to give.
Over the last few devotionals, we have explored some of the common pathways that lead us toward the fullness of the Spirit:
• Recognizing our need for God.
• Developing a deeper thirst for His presence.
• Making room for the Spirit through repentance.
• Yielding every area of our lives in complete surrender.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not a formula. We cannot reduce it to a series of steps where A + B + C + D automatically produces a spiritual experience. Yet throughout Scripture and in the testimonies of believers, we see recurring patterns. God often leads thirsty, repentant, surrendered hearts into a deeper experience of His Spirit.
Just as our conversion stories differ from person to person, the experience of being filled with the Holy Spirit may look different for each believer. Yet there is also a common certainty. We know when we belong to Christ. We know our sins are forgiven and that we have eternal life (1 John 5:13). In the same way, those who have been filled with the Holy Spirit know that God has met them in a life-changing way.
There is an inner witness, a settled assurance deep within our spirit. We can testify to what God has done.
“All of Me for All of You”
At that place of surrender, we simply ask.
Jesus gives us this invitation: “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Luke 11:13).
Jesus points us to the generosity of the Father. Among all the gifts God gives His children, the gift of the Holy Spirit stands supreme. The Father delights to pour out His Spirit upon those who seek Him with sincere hearts.
When we ask, we are saying, “Lord, all of me belongs to You. Fill me with all that You are.”
We ask for His fullness, His power, His presence, His anointing, and His enabling work in our lives. We invite Him to lead, empower, and transform every part of who we are.
The Father is willing to give the fullness of His Spirit to those who ask. Scripture reminds us, “You do not have because you do not ask God” (James 4:2). God is not reluctant. He delights to respond to believing hearts that seek Him.
And asking is not merely a one-time act. While there is a decisive moment of infilling, the Christian life remains one of continual dependence upon the Spirit. We ask, receive, and keep asking. Again and again, we come to God with open hearts, and again and again He fills us with His presence.
So how would you answer this question?
Are you filled with the Holy Spirit?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I recognize my need for Your Holy Spirit. I hunger and thirst for more of You. Search my heart and reveal anything that would hinder Your work in my life. I confess my sins and surrender myself completely to You.
Fill me with Your Holy Spirit. Let Your presence permeate every part of my life. Empower me, guide me, and transform me. I receive by faith all that You desire to give. May Your Spirit control my thoughts, my words, my actions, and my desires.
All of me for all of You.
Amen.
