The Holy Spirit 11 – The Eternal Spirit

All three Persons of the Godhead were involved in our salvation.

“How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” (Hebrews 9:14).

The unblemished Christ poured out his life blood on the cross. His once-and-for-all sacrifice was fully accepted by the living God. Through the power of the eternal Spirit, Jesus secured our redemption forever.

By trusting Christ, we are not only forgiven of our sins. Our guilty consciences are cleansed, clear and clean!

While making this emphasis on our great salvation, an attribute of the Holy Spirit is also highlighted.

The Holy Spirit is eternal – without beginning or ending. The Holy Spirit always was and he always will be.

Only God is eternal. God stands outside of time, and he is not limited by time. He has no beginning point and no ending point. He was not created and nothing caused him to be.

Since this is only true of God, in calling the third Person of the Trinity the “eternal Spirit”, he is clearly affirmed as God.

Being eternal we are assured that the Holy Spirit was at work in us in our yesterdays. He is with us in our todays. He will be guiding us in our tomorrows. He is timelessly present.

Over the last several devotionals, we’ve looked at seven biblical titles of the Holy Spirit that describe who he is and what he does.

As the Spirit of Truth, he tells us the truth about God and Jesus and guides us into all the truth.

As the Spirit of Holiness, he convicts and purifies and transforms us.

As the Spirit of Life, he births our spiritual life and gives us abundant life now and eternal life forever.

As the Spirit of Adoption, he brings us into God’s family and gives us all the rights and privileges as God’s children.

As the Spirit of Grace, he graciously gives us all God has for us.

As the Spirit of Glory, he rests upon us and shines in and through us.

As the Eternal Spirit, he is fully God and is with us always.
