Imagine a person whose house is on fire. The fire is raging out of control. Soon a fire truck pulls up with sirens blaring. The person runs out of their house in a rage and says, “What right do you have to come to my house! I can handle this fire myself!”
How often the fire of sins are burning within our souls. And the Spirit of Holiness comes to us as a firefighter and a rebuilder. We need to give him access.
“Spirit of Holiness” was a common Jewish name for the Holy Spirit. A regular synagogue prayer viewed the future resurrection of the dead as the ultimate demonstration of God’s power.
Thus the apostle Paul emphasized how Jesus Christ was clearly marked out as the reigning Son of God in power when he rose from the dead through the Spirit of Holiness (Romans 1:4).
Jesus is not only our Friend and Helper. He is also God and Lord of all. And the display of Christ’s triumphant, resurrection power was supplied by the Spirit of Holiness.
Christ’s death and resurrection were holy and powerful events. Death had no power over the holy, sinless Christ. And the Spirit in his holy power “raised Jesus from the dead” (Romans 8:11).
This title of the Holy Spirit – Spirit of Holiness – carries the twin themes of holiness and power.
The Holy Spirit is completely holy – convicting, cleansing, and purifying us.
The Holy Spirit is also immensely powerful – accomplishing, strengthening, and transforming us.
Ask yourself: “Is any unrepented sin smoldering within my soul?” Give God access.
Like a firefighter, the Spirit of Holiness extinguishes all the sins burning within us.
Ask yourself, “What does God want me to do today? Who does he want me to pray for or love or serve or tell about Jesus? Where does God want me to say yes? Where does God want me to say no?” Talk to God about these things.
As a rebuilder, the Spirit of Holiness powerfully changes us into all of God’s “good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).
Give the Spirit of Holiness access to your life as a firefighter and a rebuilder. Welcome his holiness to purify you. And welcome his power to reconstruct you.
